If you suffer from anxiety, you know that it’s so much more than sweaty palms, or a gigantic lump in your throat, or a racing mind.
One woman beautifully articulated what anxiety can mean to those who have it, and her post went viral for its honesty.
Brittany Nichole Morefield, a makeup artist, posted her story on Facebook.
“Anxiety isn’t just having a hard time catching your breath,” she started. “Anxiety is waking up at 3 am from a dead sleep because your heart is racing. Anxiety is breaking out in a rash for no reason. Anxiety is stressing over things that may or my not be real.”
She described what anxiety manifested itself as for her.
“Anxiety is questioning your faith, how could my creator allow me to feel this way!?” she continued. “Anxiety is calling your sister 3 hours before she gets up for work, in hopes she’ll answer so you can get your mind off the attack. Anxiety is a 2 am shower. Anxiety is your mood changing in a matter of minutes.”
She also described what it feels like on a physical level: crying painful tears and nausea. It’s verbal, too: “Anxiety is a lot of ‘what’s wrong’ and ‘I don’t know.'”
Morefield also stressed the importance of remembering that your feelings DO matter.
“Just because you’re bothered by something others aren’t, it doesn’t make you crazy or worthless,” she insisted. “Some of the most successful people in life have anxiety. This is not your fault. This is not the end. You are strong. You are intelligent. You are brave. You are worthy.”
Morefield’s post has been shared over 420,000 times and has received more than 59,000 comments.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, over 40 million adults have anxiety in the US. If you’re one of them, know that there are plenty of people who understand you — and that there are so many who are willing to listen.
